where it all began...

Overland trip to Cape Town (24,000km). What?

Some people have asked us 'why are you going to do this?' and 'what about your jobs?' 'what about your house?'. The answer is actually quite simple: what about it?

Quite forever, we have been in love with Africa, so the obvious choice for this overland trip is in Africa! We needed a real break and decided that it was time to live our dream.

How are we going to do this?

One step at a time. We want to do an overland trip for as long as we can. The first thing you do is to figure out how much budget you can make available and compare it with how much you need to cover all expenses. At the time of looking at the budget, your gut feeling tells you already if it is possible or not. Then it’s a matter of combining some key figures and getting your planning in place. But how to do a planning and get the necessary insight in the meantime...

Where to start?

One of our first energy boosts came from looking at one of the overlanders website who are on a trip (thanks a lot Koen and Karin-Marijke). Somehow it’s reinsuring to see other people doing the same thing you have in mind and sometime think it’s a bit of a crazy project. So if they do it, why not us? From there, the ball starts rolling very quickly, you click from one website to the next and before you know it, there is so much information available that you soon are overloaded and must take a break to organize yourself and all the info you come across.

Within a couple of days of not being able to sleep, daydreaming about the adventure, reading website after website, we ordered the bible for overlanders from Bradt travel guides: Africa Overland: 4x4 • Motorbike • Bicycle • Truck. This book is in one word AMAZING. Anything you need to know to get you started and have an overview of what to arrange, is in this book. Small warning though: once you start reading it, there is no turning back! You'll be hooked.

Check our route page to find out where we plan to go.
